A Socio-medical Study on the Intrauterine Device in a Rural Area

Abstract
A socio-medical study was carried out to 800 women who took loop (intra-uterine contraceptive device) insertions during the peried from January 1966 to October 1966 in a rural area, Wha-sung county, Kyung Gi Province, Korea. As the results of this study the following conclusions were obtained.
1) Most important reason not wished more children than present numbers was financial difficulty (60%) and the next was difficulty in educational support(15%).
2) Most ideal number of their children was 3 sons and 2 daughters (37.7%) and the next was 2 sons and 2 daughters (24.0%)
3) Most prevalent source of information on the loop insertion in family planning was health center (82.5%), and next aquaintance or friend (12.8%) followed.
4) In educational background of the women, 82.3% of them graduated from elementary school, 6.9% from middle school, 0.4% from high school, and 10.0% of them were illiterated.
5) Most common occupation of their husbands was agriculture(78.7%), and next public officer (5.5%).
6) Among the objects(800 women), 83.0% of them were not religionists, and remainders were Protestant 8.6%, Buddism 7.1% and Catholic 1.3%.
7) Most prevalent age of marriage of the women was 16¡­20 years of age (57.0%), and next 21¡­25 years of age (41.9%) followed.
The average age of marriage was 20.3 years.
8) Present numbers of their children were between 0¡­9 (average:4). Average numbers of children of the women aged 16¡­20, 21¡­25, 26¡­30, 31¡­35, 36¡­40 and 41¡­45 years were 1.4, 1.6, 3.4, 4.5, 5.5 and 6.1 repectively.
9) Contraceptive methods used prior to the loop insertion were condom(23.0%) and tablet(3.1%) etc. And 70.5% of them have not used any methods.
10) Among 800 women used loop, there occured 1.6% of spontaneous expulsion of the loop within 6 months.
11) Among 800 women used loop, 10.1% of them rmoved the loop within 6 months because of the side reactions of bleeding, lumbage, infection and others.
12) The side reactions occured in 18.5% of the women, within 6 months of loop insertions. Main side reactions were bleeding (33.1%), hypermenorrhea (29.1%), lumbago(25.0%), infection(4.7%) and vaginal discharge(5.4%).
13) In most cases th filling of sexual intercourse were not changed by the loop insertion.
